Aluminum Titanium Nitride (AlTiN) is
a Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) thin film coating that is specially
designed for use in high temperature operations and materials
that are difficult in machining. In many cases, tools may be operated
dry. This lowers operation costs and minimizes coolant costs.
When run at higher speeds the aluminum turns to aluminum oxide,
which protects the edge against heat degradation and wear.
Titanium Carbonitride (TiCN) is
a Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) thin film coating that provides
superior wear resistance. Speeds and feeds may be increased in
almost all applications. Coolant is beneficial while using this
coating.
Amorphous Diamond (AD / DLC) is
a Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) thin film coating that bridges
the gap between crystalline diamond films and other Diamond-Like-Carbon
(DLC) films. It is more stable at elevated temperatures due to
its non-hydrogenated character. AD coated tools have been successful
in many applications including aluminum, automotive aluminum,
graphite, nylon, plastic and wood. This coating may increase tool
life three to five times that of an uncoated tool.
True Crystalline Diamond is a
Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) thin film coating that is the
hardest coating available with a hardness rating of 10,000 Vickers,
up to three times harder than PVD Metal Nitride and Amorphous
Diamond-Like Coatings (DLC). It is an excellent choice to achieve
tool life up to ten times longer over uncoated tools when cutting
abrasive non-ferrous materials like graphite, hard carbon, and
plastic or composites reinforced with glass or carbon fibers.
This coating is also recommended for machining aluminum-silicon
alloys because the fine grain structure provides a smooth tool
surface for good part finish and reduced chip welding.
